The Temple of Mithras

The Temple of Mithras – breaking news – place of worship discovered in the City of London that wasn’t designed by Sir Christopher Wren!

You can see the temple at the recently opened at the new Bloomberg building opposite Canon Street station. The Temple was discovered in the 1950s on a bomb site. After some debate about what should be done with the discovery a decision was taken to dismantle it and reconstruct it nearby. So in 1962 the reconstruction was unveiled 100 meters from its original location.

When Bloomberg acquired the site in 2010 they committed to the care of the monument, and working with the City of London, dismantled the temple and rebuilt it close to its original position. And it is now open to the public to view.

The site was at the heart of Londinium, the Roman city built after the Romans invaded in 43D. The level of the Roman road was around 7 meters below that of the modern streets. In the new space you can see over 600 Roman artefacts, items left behind or lost by the first people to live on this site.
